Study like Your Favorite Characters:

Paris Geller

You're already one of my favorite people. You're driven, witty, a little rude sometimes, but get stuff done.

Studying is Paris's forte, and nothing will stop her from achieving the best out of everyone in the room. However, she takes mindful breaks to re-energize, whether its eating a nutritious meal, going for a quick jog, or shouting at someone.

THE STEPS TO SUCCESS:

  1. Early Start: Paris starts off her day with a rigorous schedule; starting very early in the morning. By beginning her studying at 6~7:00 AM, she believes in maximizing ultimate productivity and gaining that early advantage above everyone else.

  2. Focused Blocks: She prefers intense, focused study sessions. Paris studies a subject extensively for 1~2 hour blocks with no interruptions nor distractions. She’s known for her ultimate commitment, and uses the Pomodoro Technique to keep track of her time.

  3. Organized Notes: Paris is incredibly organized, so she meticulously reviews and updates her notes. She spends up to 30 minutes each day organizing her study materials and ensuring everything is perfectly outlined.

  4. Group Study: Paris values collaboration when it suits her personal goals. She might spend an hour or so in study groups or discussion sessions, especially if she knows she's right. Plus, she loves telling people they're wrong.

  5. Short Breaks: While she is disciplined, Paris also takes short, efficient breaks to avoid burnout. She could take 10-15 minutes every 2 hours to go for a jog, grab a healthy snack, or call Rory.

  6. Evening Review: In the evening, Paris would review her day’s study work more than two times, update her study plans, and prepare for the next day. A studying tactic she uses at the very, very end of her day is the Blurting Method, just to ensure she studied everything right and efficiently. Finally, she goes to sleep early, so she can wake up the next morning and study as rigorously as the night before.

Sheldon Cooper

I don't know if I like you, or I hate you. I think you brag on accident, which isn't your fault, but it is terribly annoying.

However, you are incredibly talented and literally a genius so I have to give you credit where it's due.

THE STEPS TO SUCCESS:

  1. Strict Schedule: Sheldon adheres to a rigid schedule. He would likely start studying at the same time every day, perhaps around 8:00 AM.

  2. Theoretical Deep Dive: Sheldon spends long periods on theoretical work. Expect 3-hour blocks focused on deep, intense study of physics or another scientific field, without interruptions.

  3. Precision and Order: His study materials are also incredibly organized. He would spend time ensuring all notes, papers, and resources are perfectly arranged and labeled.

  4. Regular Breaks: Sheldon’s breaks are also scheduled precisely. He might take 15-minute breaks every 90 minutes to engage in a specific activity, like playing a video game or eating a particular snack.

  5. Routine Review: He dedicates time to reviewing and refining his work. Expect him to spend an hour or so at the end of each study session revisiting key concepts and verifying his findings.

  6. Experimental Validation: Sheldon often tests theories and hypotheses. He might include practical experiments or simulations as part of his study routine to validate his ideas.

  7. Evening Reflection: In the evening, Sheldon would likely review his progress, organize his notes, and prepare for the next day's study. This could include updating his research logs or scheduling future study sessions.

  8. Weekend Study: Sheldon might also use weekends for additional study or research projects, ensuring he stays ahead in his field.

Types of Studying for Different Subjects:

Biology⚗️🦠🔬🧬🧫

  • flash cards - biology is 90% memorizing, and using flash cards is always a foolproof method for studying

  • concept maps - drawing & labeling the diagrams you see in a textbook after studying them is beneficial and helps a lot by actively recalling

  • mnemonic devices - sometimes different processes and information can be difficult to memorize so using these (for example, PMAT) will help a ton

Chemistry🪸🐚🥽🧪🔬

  • flash cards - chemistry is also heavy in memorization, so flash cards will definitely help

  • the internet - looking up practice problems on the internet will give you exposure to the many different kinds of chemistry problems you may encounter on your next test/quiz/etc

  • teaching - this is pretty general to all studying, but teaching concepts you may not be 100% sure about to someone else is always helpful in both memorizing/solving problems

Physics⚗️🧠📚🚀𝞹

  • the internet - finding practice problems/simulations on the web can also prepare you for a range of different kinds of problems and really practice concepts

  • blurting - blurting is typically associated with memorization, and most of the memorizing you'll be doing in physics is formulas. and I wouldn't recommend flash cards for memorizing formulas since you're not actively memorizing them

  • spaced repetition - this method is also really general, but with difficult topics like physics, spaced repetition is effective

MEDICINE💊🧠🌡️🔬🦠

  • the internet - there are so many patient case studies that are super confusing on the internet, so finding one shouldn't be hard and it will be helpful when exploring ALL the potential problems/outcomes

  • flash cards - in medicine, there are prefixes and suffixes that are common in numerous areas and situations, and memorizing these using flash cards is efficient

  • study groups - most likely, you will never be working along in a medical setting. there will be people and experienced physicians around you to discuss what happened and what to do with a patient

  • teaching - teaching information to juniors can help them and yourself too so you don't forget the basics

General Tips for Studying:
  1. NO POP MUSIC/MUSIC YOU ENJOY!!! sorry to break this to you guys, but if you listen to your own music while studying, you're digging your own grave. say good-bye to your grades. this includes watching a TV show/youtube video!! recommendation: listen to classical music/coffee jazz. it's the best.

  2. COUNTDOWN TO STUDYING!! when you're doing something super unproductive like being on your phone, you should give yourself a mental countdown like: ok we're going to start studying in 3...2...1... and then put your phone down and start grinding. I usually chuck my phone on to my bed then start but you do you!!

  3. FIND YOUR TRIGGER! typically everyone has that one thing in their life that just motivates them to start grinding. for me, I go on Pinterest and if I ever see a picture or a collage of Paris Geller/Rory Gilmore studying, I'm just like, heck yeah. and I start. this could also be like just finding a role model or a person you aspire to be in the future and just think about all the hard work they had to put in to be as successful as they are currently!

  4. REWARDING YOURSELF!! maybe it's been a while since you've starting studying and you've become super tired and bored. that's totally ok! to rejuvenate, I recommend going outside in nature, maybe smelling some flowers, running around or cuddling with a pet, eating your favorite snack, just belting and singing and dancing in your room to Taylor Swift, and more. find what you enjoy and can do in maybe under 10 minutes and do it.
